Transforming from sleepy fishing town to winter resort mecca and then into a world-class four seasons resort it would have been prudent to think the resorts evolution would stop there. After a stellar 2015/16 season where records were broken and WB emerged as the best performing ski resort in the world the resort will now undergo possibly its biggest metamorphosis yet.
Enter the Renaissance development. A ground-breaking $345 million development set to revolutionize adventure as we know it- a new era of play that will set a benchmark of recreation for the rest of the world to follow. Here we will delve into the new Renaissance Development, and what you can anticipate over the coming years (brace yourself- Whistler’s future is about to blow your mind).
Until now, adventuring in Whistler has involved exposing yourself to the elements. Winter and summer, the peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb were a playground for outdoor enthusiasts around the globe. The Renaissance project will bring adventure indoors with The Watershed and The Annex, two state of the art indoor sports centres expanding the scope of Whistler’s adventure offering.
The Watershed will introduce the element of water into Whistler’s adventure mix. Think waterslides, waves, rope swings and caves the most unique indoor water centre the continent has ever seen.
The Annex indoor sports complex will facilitate the birth of a new generation of extreme athleticism featuring a state-of-the-art facility built specifically for aspiring skiers, snowboarders, mountain-bikers, skateboarders and BMXers. School groups, summer camps and kids from all over the world will now have a space to push the limits, strengthen their skills, and revolutionize sport.
If you think Whistler Blackcomb is pretty cool already- prepare to have your mind blown. The Renaissance project will see on-mountain improvements expanding the playground for skiers, riders, bikers and hikers. Winter expansion will see new lifts, better facilities and a modern upscale facelift. The Whistler Bike Park will undergo an expansion that will double the current size of the park. The development will be centred around Creekside opening up a vast myriad of trials for riders of all abilities and ages. Hikers too will benefit from the Renaissance Development with the construction of North America’s highest and most spectacular suspension bridge bringing sight-seeing to new heights. Trail improvements, cantilevered lookouts, grind-inspired fitness trails and improved hiking routes are on the books for the alpine.
Not only will visitors have new places to play, but there will also be new places to stay. An uber luxurious six star resort will be built, redefining elegance and sophistication in a mountain setting. The boutique resort will feature a residence and club and will truly provide an accommodation experience unmatched anywhere in the world. There will also be a 55-65 ski in ski out townhome development- Blackcomb Terrace Townhomes. This slopeside community will provide a new place for people to play and live just steps away from the slopes of Blackcomb Mountain.
Whistler Blackcomb has always been known to think big and push the limits. You don’t get to be the number one ski resort in N America (and the world), by being moderate. The Renaissance Development is a testament to the resort’s innovation and commitment to providing guests the best all season, indoor and outdoor experience in the world. As if Whistler wasn’t already the best place for adventurous souls across the globe the next several years will see the resort destination smash the status-quo and reinvent what it means to be the ultimate year-round destination.
