Thanksgiving weekend is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing.
Turkey – lots of turkey.
There will be turkey on your plate, of course, but there’s another turkey that you need to know about: the Whistler Blackcomb Turkey Sale.
This annual super sale features a ton of brand new snow gear at ridiculously low prices. From floor models to last year’s line up, you’ll find everything from skis and snowboards to apparel to boots to small accessories, like gloves and ski socks.
If you need to stock up on anything before the mountains open, this is, without a doubt, the best time to do it.
Between the crowds, the line-ups, and the sheer quantity of stuff, the Turkey Sale can be a little overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this step-by-step guide to help you find success at the sale.
You still have a few days to pull out all of your old gear and determine what you’re missing. First, determine what you already have – the gear that you used last year that is still in great shape for this year.
Second, decide what needs fixing. In this category, assess whether the item is a quick and easy fix or whether it will require some extra time and money. If it is the latter, you might want to replace it outright.
Third, figure out what you need for this coming season. Maybe you’re due for a new pair of skis or you’re finally ready to update to Gore Tex.
Now that you know what’s missing from your snow kit, make a list of the items that you need. This may seem over-the-top, but trust us – when you’re surrounded by enticing gear at incredible prices, you’ll want a list to keep you focused. Add your list as a note in your phone for quick and easy access.
While there will be plenty of staff at the Turkey Sale, they will be busy stocking, organizing, and ringing through purchases. The sale itself is not the best time to ask for detailed advice on gear, so it’s best to go into the sale well prepared.
Here’s the catch: you won’t know exactly what’s for sale until you get there. The surprise element is part of the fun! The best approach is to get to know which brands fit you best. Once you’re at the sale, you can decide whether you’re willing to try something new if you don’t see exactly what you’re looking for.
Whistler locals, season’s pass holders, and Edge card holders, can hit the sale as early as noon on Friday, October 4. Everyone else will have to wait until Saturday, October 5. The sale takes place in a variety of locations throughout the village but is held primarily at the base of Whistler Mountain (4280 Mountain Square).
Generally speaking, the earlier you go, the shorter the lines will be. Keep in mind that they will continue to stock new stuff right through to Monday, October 14th. You never know what you’ll find!
Snacks and a warm beverage are a great idea to keep you happy while you’re waiting in line – and there could be a decent-sized line while you’re waiting to enter the sale. On the other hand, try not to bring backpacks, purses, or other bags you don’t need – you’ll have to check them at the entrance anyway.
Once you’ve made it inside the doors, start hunting! If you find something that you like, pick it up – there’s no guarantee that there are more of that item at the sale, and someone else might snatch it up if you take your time to mull over it.
Having said that, don’t forget your manners. If you change your mind about something, return it so someone else can find it. No pushing, no shoving, and definitely no plucking something out of someone else’s hands!
You’ve got some shiny new gear, and now you’re ready for the Opening Day count down! Congratulations – you survived the Turkey Sale!
