All Aboard! Check Out Whistler by Train

The ride from Vancouver to Whistler is simply too beautiful to ignore. Why not make the journey as exciting as the destination itself?

Most people visiting Whistler come by way of Vancouver, a journey of roughly 115 kilometres (or 71 miles). If you’re looking to start your Whistler adventure with a bang from the very beginning, forget the rental car or coach service—hop on board the Rocky Mountaineer.

The Insider Experience

The Rocky Mountaineer train route starts in North Vancouver (a motor coach picks passengers up from downtown Vancouver) and takes its passengers through the Sea to Sky Climb up to Whistler.

Inside the train, passengers are treated to a scrumptious breakfast (or afternoon snack, if you’re taking the trip from Whistler to Vancouver) and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks. Seats are spacious, offering extended legroom. But the real action takes place outside of the train—that’s where the panoramic windows come into play.

Check Out Those Views!

Be sure to grab a window seat, because you won’t want to miss out on the incredible views throughout the journey. The awe-inspiring sights are non-stop from start to finish: the rich blues of the Howe Sound dotted with lush, green islands; the towering Coastal Mountains, building as you near your destination; the powerful Shannon Falls and, later, the equally impressive Brandywine Falls; stately Mount Garibaldi; and the rushing, gushing Cheakamus River are just a few of the views you’ll encounter en route.

Don’t forget your camera: there are plenty of photo opportunities along the route. On second thought, it’s not a bad idea to pack along an extra memory card.

Get Educated

Rocky Mountaineer Hosts will guide you throughout the journey, offering insightful commentary as you chug along through Sea to Sky country. The Hosts know everything about everything, so don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Make plans to check out the Heritage Observation car. This open-air car, built in 1914 and completely restored, is perfect for taking a little stretch and breathing in that pure, fresh mountain air.

Try Something New

If you’re used to driving the Sea to Sky Highway, consider swapping out the road for the railroad tracks. Not only does the train trip take you through areas that you can’t see from the highway, but it’s also a great way to start off your Whistler adventure stress-free. Everybody can sit back, relax, and take in the sights—no need to fuss about gas or traffic.

Travel by train also allows you to experience a little slice of history. Railroads have a rich history in Canada, and tackling even a short trip by train will give you a taste of the journey that many of Canada’s settlers experienced when they first arrived in the country. Many people who come to Whistler by train say that it is a highlight of their Canadian adventure.
