WHISTLER LIFE

7 New Year’s Resolutions to Tackle in Whistler

The holiday decorations have been packed away, the last bottle of bubbly has been consumed, and now it’s time to focus on a fresh start for 2016.

We firmly believe that new years resolutions should incorporate as much fun and adventure as possible. Instead of depriving yourself or halfheartedly committing to resolutions that you know won’t stick, we encourage you to set goals that excite you – and maybe scare you, just a little.

Here are seven New Year’s resolutions that you can accomplish right here in beautiful Whistler, British Columbia.

Go Bungee Jumping

It’s time to finally challenge that nagging fear of heights that you’ve always had – and what better way to overcome your fear than by leaping off a bridge into the abyss?

Whistler is home to a ton of adrenaline-filled activities, and bungee jumping is definitely one of the most extreme options available. Our bungee jump takes place in the middle of the forest, and participants get to fly 160’ over the Cheakamus River – the gorgeous views just might distract you from the jump you’re about to take.

The best part? Bungee jumping is available 365 days a year, so you have no excuses not to go!

Run in a Race

Vague goals like “lose some weight” or “get in shape” will get you nowhere. Instead, set a concrete goal like registering for a local race, and establishing a training plan that will get you where you need to be.

We suggest registering for the Whistler Half Marathon, taking place on June 4th, 2016. This time frame gives you plenty of time to get ready for the run so that you’re completely confident come race day. Not quite ready to tackle 21.1 km? Not to worry – the Whistler Half Marathon also offers a 5k and 10k course. Pick your poison!

Volunteer

Whistler has given you plenty of cherished memories – now it’s time for you to give back to Whistler! There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer across town. Make a short-term commitment by signing up to help out at GranFondo, IronMan, or another one-off event taking place in Whistler. Alternatively, seek out ongoing positions with organizations like the Whistler Arts Council, the Whistler Food Bank, or Big Brothers Big Sisters. The sky is the limit, and Whistler needs you!

Try Heli Skiing

If your 2016 is all about going bigger than ever, then you're ready to bite the bullet and sign up for a heli skiing tour. Admit it – this one has been on your bucket list for years. Now is the time to do it – what are you waiting for?

Learn a New Skill

Escape your comfort zone by trying something that’s completely new to you. With so many incredible activities to try here in Whistler, surely there’s something you’ve never done before. A few ideas: snowshoeing, cross country skiing, mountain biking, bobsleigh, skeleton, horseback riding, fishing… the list goals on. Another thought: if you’re a skier, try your hand at snowboarding – and vice versa.

More than a few of us could benefit from putting down our phones or closing down our computers a little more often. Instead of reaching for your iPad, reach for a book. The Whistler Public Library has everything you need to satiate your inner bookworm. Not sure where to start? Library staff have displayed their personal picks on a bookshelf near the entrance – these are sure bets.

Take Care of Yourself

Here’s a resolution that we can all get behind: give yourself some much-needed TLC. Go to bed a little earlier to get a full eight hours, commit to your yoga practice... or for some intensive self-care, head to the Scandinave Spa.

The hot and cold baths combined with the steam rooms, saunas, and solariums are simply magical – you’ll feel the stress melting out of you. We recommend throwing in a Swedish massage for the ultimate in relaxation.
